How We Make Our Puzzles
A transparent look at the engine behind every WordSearchDen puzzle, the word lists we curate, and how difficulty is designed.
The puzzle engine
Every puzzle starts with a curated word list. The engine places each word into the grid in one of eight directions — across, down, and diagonally, including reversed — then fills every remaining square with random letters. Pressing New Layout reruns the placement, so the same word list can produce unlimited different grids.
Word lists & difficulty
Word lists are written by hand for each theme, then checked for spelling, tone and age-appropriateness. Easy puzzles favor short words placed in fewer directions; harder puzzles use longer vocabulary, denser grids and more diagonals. The maker lets you apply the same engine to your own lists.
Print rendering
Every puzzle has a one-click print sheet that renders just the grid and word list — no navigation, no ads, no clutter — with a layout that stays identical to what you see on screen.
Privacy & data
Puzzles are generated in your browser. The maker never uploads the words you type. We use standard, aggregate analytics to understand which puzzles are popular. See our privacy policy for details.
Limitations
Puzzles are entertainment, not academic material — word lists simplify topics deliberately, and spellings follow US English conventions. Found something that should be fixed? Tell us.

Frequently asked questions
How is a word search generated?
Words are placed into the grid in eight directions (including diagonals and reversed words), then every empty square is filled with random letters. Clicking New Layout repeats the process with a fresh random arrangement.
Do two visitors get the same puzzle?
Usually not — each layout is generated fresh in your browser when the page loads, so the grid you see is typically unique to your visit.
Does the maker send my words anywhere?
No. The word search maker runs entirely in your browser; the words you type are never uploaded to a server.
